Item Description

Renowned photographer Leon Borensztein began his most personal project thirty years ago when his daughter was born: "Throughout my artistic career I have been driven by the need to give voice to the unheard and unseen. This desire became a personal passion when my daughter Sharon was born. Just after her birth I felt there was something wrong, and slowly we learned that she was born with disabilities. I started photographing my daughter before she was born and I have never stopped."

His latest book, “Sharon,” is a testimony of a father documenting every stage of the challenged life of his severely disabled daughter and has received positive reviews by the New York Times and the Huffington Post.  This collectible item is one of only 36 special editions signed by Leon and Sharon.  The slipcase began with Sharon’s “artwork”. Friends took her art/drawings/writings and made rubber stamps. Sharon used the stamps of her original work to create covers for the slipcases, no two alike. Leon individually handcrafted the slipcase so the owner has a glimpse of Sharon and she has an opportunity to contribute to her father's book.  This special edition comes with an 8x10 black and white print of Sharon's small hand in his.

This fine art book offers a unique opportunity to increase awareness about disability and challenges of single parenthood.  Leon is an internationally acclaimed photographer whose areas of focus are in psychological portraiture and documentary. Throughout his artistic career he has been driven by the need to give voice to the unheard and unseen. His previous books: “Metamorphosis”, “One is Adam, One is Superman” and “American Portraits” are visual documentation of salient moments in their lives.

Leon has worked for leading magazines, including extensive work for The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, Vogue, Fortune, among others. His work appeared in Life magazine, and Harpers. He received an MFA with honors from SF Art Institute, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and his work is in collections of: Biblioteque Nationale Paris, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, San Francisco MOMA, Chicago Art Institute, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and others. He had many one man and group shows in USA and internationally. He teaches at S.F. Art Institute.
