Since its beginning nearly a century ago, the Minneapolis Golf Club has grown gracefully and matured dramatically. Its storied reputation and tradition as one of the premiere private golf clubs in Minnesota began in 1916, when five members of the Minneapolis Athletic Club engaged Willie Park Jr.—the legendary Scottish golf course architect—to create Minneapolis Golf Club’s original course design. In 1920, another iconic Scotsman, Donald Ross, revised the routing to enhance the course experience.
At The Minneapolis Golf Club, the heritage of two of these two heralded golf architects has survived the arduous test of time. Their shared philosophy that golf should be a pleasure and not a penance is reflected in the enthusiasm of those who have played golf at The Minneapolis Golf Club.
In 1924, the Minneapolis Golf Club was chosen to host its first tournament—The Minnesota State Open–and in 1950, it hosted the United States Amateur. In 1959, the PGA Championship came to the Minneapolis Golf Club, which marked CBS’ first golf tournament in Minnesota to be aired on national television.
1998 was among the most memorable of years for Minneapolis Golf Club when Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were among the players who competed in the Dayton’s Challenge. More than 15,000 enthusiastic spectators gathered for a glimpse of golfing immortality. In the years following, major winners including Phil Mickelson, Payne Stewart, Tom Watson, Fred Couples, Ben Crenshaw and Nancy Lopez lavished praise on Minneapolis Golf Club as a classic, traditional course.
