Item Description
Southern California gets no more spectacular than it is at Terranea Resort. Perched dramatically on an oceanfront bluff looking over miles of Pacific coastline, this Los Angeles area resort is a veritable gem. More than 100 acres of lushly landscaped grounds welcome you with a distinctively Mediterranean vibe at this Palos Verdes paradise, where accommodations are set in a variety of structures. The main hotel building houses guest rooms and suites with a relaxed modern style, none less than 450 square feet in size, featuring thoughtful amenities like iPod docks, pillow-top beds, private terraces, and views of the landscape and ocean. At Terranea Resort, life is like a magnificent dream.
Overview
Poised above coastal bluffs with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, Terranea (terra-NAY-a) Resort debuted in June 2009 as the only luxury resort destination on the Los Angeles coast. Guests enjoy a sophisticated, yet relaxed ambiance at this Mediterranean-inspired retreat surrounded by a glistening, panoramic seascape.
Celebrated for its natural beauty, the 102-acre estate features 582 guestrooms and suites, including spacious bungalows, casitas and villas. Luxurious amenities spotlight eight unique dining experiences, a full-service spa and fitness center, award-winning golf course, four swimming pools, kids' club, ecological enrichment programs and 135,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor wedding and event space.
Location
Terranea is located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, one of Southern California's most scenic and coveted coastlines overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. Guests enjoy a tranquil escape in this natural haven, with convenient access from both Los Angeles International and Long Beach airports and situated just 30 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles.
Design
To ensure a harmonious effect the combined efforts of Hill Glazier Architects and Scheurer Architects produce a destination resort that is an elegant blend of authentic Mediterranean design, coupled with the ecological and aesthetic characteristics of the natural habitat of this rare coastline location.
At first glance, this eco friendly hotel appears to be two and three stories high as it gently falls away to four and five stories toward the sea to embrace the coastal views. In addition, there is seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces to take full advantage of the location's ideal climate and natural beauty.
History
Rancho Palos Verdes takes its name from Cañada de Palos Verdes or canyon of green trees and was originally inhabited by the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.
Years later, the land passed to a consortium of New York investors led by Frank A. Vanderlip, by way of Don Dolores Sepulveda. Considered the founding father of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Vanderlip built the first homes on the land in 1924 with a plan for a magnificent Italian village that would hug the coast.
Later, the site became Marineland of the Pacific, a seaside animal theme park, and was subsequently used as a set location for various major motion pictures and television productions. Lowe Enterprises became involved with the 102-acre property in 1998 and thus began a 10-year journey, which is now Terranea Resort.
Accommodations
Terranea Resort has been meticulously designed to heighten and preserve the natural beauty of its oceanfront backdrop, showcasing a coastal Mediterranean aesthetic with design elements sensitive to the native environment. Each of the resort's 582 spacious guest retreats exude a warm, residential feel with luxurious, yet comfortable furnishings and private balconies that overlook elegant gardens and breathtaking ocean vistas.
Terranea's 360-room hotel offers 326 guest rooms and 34 suites that range from 450 square feet to the 1,800-square-foot Presidential Suite. Contemporary features include rich linens, stone baths and amenities such as flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations and Wi-Fi access.
For added space and privacy, guests can choose from 20 two-bedroom bungalows, 50 three-bedroom ocean view casitas and 32 villas that range from 1,850 square feet to 2,800 square feet. Each offers spacious kitchens and living areas. Room lock-off capabilities offer added flexibility for groups of any size.
