Noah Wieder is a student in the severe and profound cluster program at Lane Tech. Early in life, Noah suffered an iatrogenic injury that left him with extensive neurological, immune, and fine motor damage. He re-learned to speak to some extent, but was unable to write or draw, despite a tremendous passion for art and illustration. At age three, a few hours after taking his first dose of an enzyme formulated to help autistic children who could not process certain phenolic compounds, Noah picked up a pencil and for the first time ever, drew a figure. He immediately, passionately began drawing for hours a day, perfecting his skill despite motor impairments that leave him with only the ability to hold a writing or painting utensil in his left fist.
Noah currently functions at approximately an 18-36 month capacity in most regards. He enjoys picture books, children’s movies, and museums. His artistic sensibility, however, is remarkably advanced. Noah’s work includes abstract paintings, copies of masterworks, illustrations, and a vast collection of logo art. He also created the logo for the Lane Tech cluster program’s beverage business, Around the Corner Cafe.
In 2016, Noah’s art was featured on the cover of the Special Olympics calendar, and a copy of this work - which was created in his adaptive art class here at Lane - is on display at Midway Airport’s Special Olympics art gallery. He has exhibited at the Brilliance of Autism National Exhibit, Lane Tech’s Clay and Arts Festival, Holy Name Cathedral, and his logo art was featured at a Museum of Contemporary Art Living Room event. He has also donated dozens of paintings for auctions, fundraisers, and benefits, including to the Night Ministry, Lincoln Way Area Chorale, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Music Program, and the Lane Tech Special Olympics Team.
