Point Reyes National Seashore Association is grateful to our generous donor Emmanuel Serriere, who has offered this remarkable 25" x 31" gold framed original oil painting of the ancient Taos Pueblo, the only living Native American community designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark.
The artist, Jerry Mann, a Santa Fe, New Mexico, art broker, says, "I painted Pieblo in the fall of 2014 before we returned to St. Simons Island for the winter. The inspration is Taos Pueblo, so indelible in my mimd that I can paint it anywhere. The Tewa have occupied this adobe structure for more than 600 years, they say. If one wants to paint on location they charge a hefty fee and you have to be approved by the Governor."
He continues, "I painted the stylized work in an afternoon in my studio. Using a palette knife is tricky because the paint must be manipulated before it hardens, thus allowing colors to mix. The work is in oil and I would have priced it around $3,000."
Archaeologists say that ancestors of the Taos Indians lived in their New Mexico valley long before Columbus discovered America and hundreds of years before Europe emerged from the Dark Ages. The main part of the present buildings were most likely constructed between 1000 and 1450 A.D. The appeared much as they do today when the first Spanish explorers arrived in Northern New Mexico in 1540 and believed that the Pueblo was one of the fabled golden cities of Cibola. The two structures are considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the U.S.A.
