Point Reyes National Seashore Association is happy to partner with the National Park Service at Point Reyes for an outdoor architectural preservation walking tour of Pierce Point Ranch at Tomales Point for up to 12 people with Exhibit Specialist Kevin Palo. Families and all ages are encouraged.

This fascinating and educational tour will give participants a behind-the-scenes look at the Pierce Point Ranch along with what the park is doing to help preserve the area.

Established in 1858, the renovated Pierce Point Ranch is one of the oldest ranches on the Point Reyes Peninsula and was one of the most successful dairy ranches of its time. It is representative of the agricultural heritage of this area and is located at the north end of the Pierce Point Road.

You'll also enjoy two nights for up to 12 people in the historically significant Point Reyes Lifeboat Station, also a site of architectural preservation as well as a rich repository of Point Reyes maritime history and culture.

The Point Reyes Lifeboat Station is a National Historic Landmark overlooking beautiful Drakes Bay. It is the last remaining example of a rail-launched lifeboat station that was common on the Pacific coast. Located at Chimney Rock, the Lifeboat Station was built in 1927 by the U.S. Coast Guard and contains the crew's quarters, a large boat bay, and a marine railway system for launching a 36-foot life boat.

The ground floor houses the boat bay museum where a renovated motor boat is located.

The area around the Lifeboat Station is used by the Marine Mammal Center as a release site for rehabilitated wildlife. While staying here some visitors are unexpectedly treated to the release of an otter or harbor seal.

The best time for this tour of Pierce Point Ranch would be a Saturday in Spring. Your stay at the Historic Lifeboat Station will be subject to availability.

Kevin Palo is a Exhibit Specialist for Point Reyes National Seashore. His department is responsible for the preservation of over three hundred cultural resources within the park. Before being hired for this position Kevin was the owner of Ten Mile Restoration, which has been involved the historic preservation projects for over forty years. Over the past nine years Kevin has branched out into the education field to train a new generation in the Historic Preservation arena.
