- Item Number

- Estimated Value
- Priceless
Item Description
You and three friends will join David Press, Point Reyes National Seashore's lead wildlife biologist, to observe the rare northern spotted owl in its native habitat. As citizen scientists, you'll monitor this threatened species and learn about its important role in our local ecosystem. Bring your curiosity and binoculars. Lunch included.
Participants will learn about Northern spotted owl life history and status, and spotted owl monitoring, in Marin County. Participants will join a real survey or nest check, and so will have the opportunity to see how we get this work done. Expect to be off trail on steep, wooded terrain with areas of poison oak.
No more than 4 participants so that we can all fit in one vehicle. Must be scheduled for between March 15 and June 15, 2018, and ideally late May or early June. Offer expires June 16, 2018.
In addition you'll receive a sweet owlish gift bag from Leona's, a shop and art gallery in Point Reyes Station featuring the work of artists local to Marin County. Inside your gift bag are a kitchen or bar towel, artful fireplace matches, and an owl drinking mug with a Leona's gift card.
David Press is the Wildlife Ecologist at Point Reyes National Seashore where he has worked for nearly 20 years. Dave completed his undergraduate work at UC Santa Cruz and his Master's degree in Marine Ecology at UC Davis. In his current position with the park, Dave works to ensure that activities within the park, including public recreation, park projects, and actions taken under park-issued permits, have minimal impacts to the Seashore's wildlife communities. In addition, Dave leads the park's management and monitoring of tule elk, western snowy plovers, and northern spotted owls within the park. Dave lives in his hometown of Inverness with his wife and three young children.
