Item Description
The highest bidder wins two tickets to one classical concert in the 2017/2018 season (excluding December's concert) at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, located at 2025 Broadway. A celebrated regional symphony, the Oakland Symphony proudly offers a combination of musical excellence, educational programs, and community service. With the goal of making classical music accessible to individuals who might never before have heard symphonic music, the Oakland Symphony presents live professional and collaborative artistic performances to diverse audiences in Oakland and East Bay communities.
The winner will select from the following performances:
- W. Kamau Bell's Playlist
Friday, January 19, 2018, 8 pm
Socio-political comedian, activist, and Emmy-nominated CNN host W. Kamau Bell kicks off our groundbreaking new series inviting the major thinkers of our time to host and curate a concert and give us unique insights into their passions. This series will be a musical journey to unexpected and uncharted territory with your Oakland Symphony! Free pre-concert talk begins at 7 pm.
- Pride and Prejudice: Notes from LGBTQ
Friday, February 9, 2018, 8 pm
In this concert, part of the Notes from … series, we will reflect on self-identity and self-expression through the artistry of LGBTQ composers and musicians – celebrating difference, finding common ground and embracing the beauty of authenticity. Noah Galvin from ABC’s The Real O’Neals will be featured, along with world-renowned pianist Sara Davis Buechner.
- Rooted in Oakland
Friday, March 23, 2018, 8 pm
Oakland native Kev Choice is a classically-trained pianist who uses wit and creative lyricism to bring a positive and inspiring message to his unique blend of jazz, R&B, and soul. Working with artists such as Ms. Lauryn Hill and Michael Franti, Choice has toured all over the world. Here, the symphony has commissioned a new work by Kev, to be played alongside Schubert’s exuberant 5th symphony after opening with a gem of an overture by George Frederick Bristow.
- The Artist's Struggle
Friday, May 18, 2018, 8 pm
In this concert, we champion the role of the artist in society – as social activist, provocateur, and change maker. Leonard Bernstein’s prodigious musical gifts mirrored his lifelong – and sometimes controversial – commitment to promoting political change. Music for Bernstein was also a means of creating mutual understanding and peace. His Serenade drew its inspiration from Plato’s Symposium – a dialogue in praise of love. It has been suggested that Tchaikovsky’s ‘Pathétique’ deals with the power of Fate in life and death.
Item Special Note
Gift certificate to be redeemed no later than 14 days in advance of concert.
