Item Description
Brooklyn Dodgers outfielder and Hall of Famer, Jackie Robinson. The first African-American to play in the major leagues during the modern era, Robinson broke baseball’s “color barrier” in 1947.
Chosen by Branch Rickey specifically for his character and use of nonviolence in addition to Robinson’s extraordinary talent, his entry into baseball in an effort to end segregation contributed significantly to the Civil Rights Movement.
One of the most exciting players of his generation, the 1947 Rookie of the Year was a six-time All-Star and the 1949 National League Most Valuable Player.
This issue featuring Dodgers Hall-of-Fame icon Jackie Robinson is one of 59 unnumbered cards within the 1954 NY Journal American set. All cards featured players from the Giants, Yankees or Dodgers. This was a one-year only issue.
