Item Description
Urban Adventure Squad (UAS, www.urbanadventuresquad.org) is a program of Urban Learning and Teaching Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit education organization that develops community-based, experiential learning programs to support working families on days when schools are closed. Squad members explore D.C.'s history, geography, architecture, and culture with guest educators and go behind the scenes at local businesses and organizations to see how things work. Through their field trips, Squad members have learned how radio shows are produced, how cars work, how to compost, how to harvest rainwater, how to keep bees, and much, much more. Guest educators and Squad leaders teach Squad members about life skills, like safety and survival skills in the woods and staying calm in stressful situations, and expose them to different art forms, like composing and recording music, choreographing stage combat, writing poetry, and cartooning. Squad members put this experience and knowledge into action staging original productions, launching a geocaching series, creating and running a recycled materials carnival, and organizing a pop-up restaurant.
