Item Description

Bay Laurel Room (Maha Kali and Aubrie's Lower Elementary Class)

“The child has a different relation to his environment from ours…the child absorbs it. The things he sees are not just remembered; they form part of his soul. He incarnates in himself all in the world about him that his eyes see and his ears hear”. - Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind

“The artist must see all things as if he were seeing them for the first time. All his life he must see as he did when he was a child." - Henri Matisse

Inspiration for this project initially took form from the children’s exposure to Jane Goodall and nature conservation early in the school year. It grew to encompass the role nature plays in all of our lives and in inspiration from the paper cut-out forms Henri Matisse produced during the last decade of his life (early 1940’s- 1954).

  • Students will be exposed to Matisse’s work and thoughts on art as a lead-in to the project.
  • Color, form and line will be emphasized as a means of artistic expression.
  • A variety of local foliage will be presented to the children to select from as inspiration for drawing.
  • Students will produce one or more line drawings of their choice of leaf/leaves.
  • A limited selection of colored paper will be used for the drawings (to maintain cohesiveness of the project).
  • These leaf forms will then be cut out.
  • The leaf cut-outs will then be collaged onto a larger format paper.
  • Final collage of leaf cut-outs will be approximately 19.5”x51” and framed.
  • A booklet with additional information about the students and the process will be included.
