Item Description

Our town tour begins with a walk of the south side of the walls to gain a perspective of Dubrovnik and its famous beautiful red roofs, as well as to enjoy the view of the island of Lokrum and the open sea. Depending on your interests and wishes, we will visit at least five of the town's major landmarks:

The CATHEDRAL - The only church in Dubrovnik totally destroyed in the earthquake of 1667. It was rebuilt in 1713 by a Roman architect after a wooden model of the original cathedral. Although Baroque in detail and ornamentation, it has a clean and classic feel.

The FRANCISCAN CHURCH and MONASTERY - This baroque landmark today does unfortunately not show the original medieval Romanesque and Gothic architecture except for the copper dome and ancient Piet. The monastery museum houses an ancient dispensary, founded in 1317.

The SYNAGOGUE - The small 15th century Synagogue is the second oldest in Europe but does not offer services any longer. In 1546 a Jewish ghetto was established in the "Jewish" Street. Jews then participated in international commerce and were pioneers in marine insurance. It is known to be an important site of Sephardic culture in the world.

The RECTOR'S PALACE -Built In the 15th c, the palace presents Gothic-Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

While walking the 292 m long main street of Dubrovnik (Stradun) we will stop at ORLANDO'S COLUMN from 1418 and with a prominent history of its own.

We will see ONOFRIO'S FOUNTAIN completed in 1444 and the Clock or Bell Tower predating the clock tower on St. Mark's Square in Venice by several decades.
