The illustrated book and records were part of the preservation of the televised, New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts that began in 1958. The book includes written out musical examples, thoughts on the music by Bernstein, and pictures and drawings of instruments, elements from history, and more.
The set is broken into eight programs:
