Item Description
Indian Paintbrush, original acrylic painting on illustration board by John D. Dawson.
Featured in Haggis House Note Card; 1990.
Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja sp.): A member of the figwort family (Scrophulariaceae), the Indian Paintbrush is a prolific denizen of the mountain meadows, thickets and forests of the western United States. Though it resembles a ragged brush dipped in paint, there are actually 200 or more different species of this wildflower whose genus name honors the Spanish botanist Domingo Castillejo: one is even the state flower of Wyoming. The Indian Paintbrush lacks a well-developed root system and, thus, obtains water and nutrients by connecting to the roots of other plants such as sagebrush, oaks or grasses. 1-3 ft (30-90 cm) tall, this perennial flowers from May-September. Its clusters of 1 in. (2.5 cm) long, tubular and yellowish-green flowers are sometimes tinged with bright crimson. Surrounding bracts and upper leaves are brightly colored, usually scarlet-to-orange.
Dimensions: 3" x 5" with mat
