Laniwahine is the guardian spirit of Lokoea fishpond in Hale'iwa on the island of O'ahu. Laniwahine is famous in Hawaiian traditions and appears in stories and the name chant of Kamehameha V. She often appears as a woman or a terrifying mo’o, a giant lizard and other forms. In olden days, many worshipped her as an ancestral guardian and never failed to recognize her deeds.
Lokoea fishpond is where the artist lived and worked growing and selling fish.

All fishponds have guardian spirits. They are shape changers that can take multiple forms. They are often mo'o, giant lizards. Mo'o were both benevolent and terrifying. They did not like to see unkindness, greed or haughtiness. There are many kinds of mo'o. Fishpond mo'o were female.
