Item Description

Booklet One: "The Hawaiian Chain"

By E.H. Bryan, Jr.

Copyright 1954. Bishop Museum Press.

Excerpt from booklet: "Across the floor of the north Pacific Ocean stretches a great range of volcanic mountains. This mountain range is nearly 2,000 miles long, and one of its peaks is 32,000 feet high. Although the mountains are lofty, only their highest peaks are visible, for they are submerged in water to a depth of about 18,000 feet. The peaks which show above the surface of the sea form the islands of the Hawaiian chain, eight large islands and more than 50 islets."

Booklet Two: "Their Oceanic Majesties: Rulers of Hawaii"

Copyright 1955. Bernice P. Bishop Museum.

Excerpt from booklet: "This special exhibit commemorates the regal period of Hawaii. Before the time of Kamehameha I, the islands had been ruled by various rival chiefs, frequently at war. Kamehameha conquered one chief after another and consolidated all of the islands into one kingdom. As long as he lived, a powerful priesthood maintained a strict kapu system."

Booklet Three: "Treasures of the Hawaiian Kingdom"

Compiled by J. Patricia Morgan Swenson and Evanita S. Midkiff

Copyright 1979 by Daughters of Hawaii

Excerpt from booklet: "In Hawaii there are three restored Palaces where Hawaiian royalty once lived, and which today serve as historical museums. They are, in order of age, Hulihee Palace beside Kailua Bay in Kona, on the island of Hawaii, Queen Emma Summer Palace in Nuuanu Valley, Honolulu, and Iolani Palace in downtown Honolulu. ... In publishing this booklet, the Daughters of Hawaii hope to assist kamaaina (native born) and visitors alike to an understanding of the treasures of the Hawaiian Kingdom."

Booklet Four: "South Sea Lore"

By Kenneth P. Emory

Copyright 1943. Bernice P. Bishop Museum. Special Publication 36.

Excerpt from booklet: "This booklet is designed for fighting men going to the South Seas. Its purpose is to acquaint you with ready means of sustaining yourselves, should you be cut off from help and supplies. It is the outgrowth of requests for information which Bishop Museum staff members supplied out of knowledge and experience gained in the field."

Booklet Five: "Tributes of Hawaiian Tradition"

By Thos. G. Thrum

Copyright 1920.

Excerpt from booklet: "As a souvenir of notable scenes of Oahu, and historic traditions and myths connected therewith, these few tales are selected to meet the frequent calls for the unvarnished stories of the early Hawaiian bards relating to these points of deep interest and lasting memory to all visitors."

Booklet Six: "Petroglyphs of Hawaii"

By L.R. Mc Bride

Copyright 1969.

Excerpt from booklet: "Petroglyphs of Hawaii is not intended as a definitive study of a forgotten art. Almost anything written about petroglyphs seems assured of raising more questions than answers. Perhaps like much of our art today, they could only be explained by the artists who made them."
