Item Description
Kona paniolo continued to work “wild” cattle well after large ranch homesteads and domestication of cattle in Hawaii predominated. After the end of the period of “open range” and subsequent fencing (dry stack walls) in the 19th century ensued, there continued (and continues to this day) to be wild cattle in mauka forest and in difficult terrain to round up. Here, cowboys from McCandless Ranch work wild cattle in Kona.
This photograph on canvas appeared in Kona Historical Society's 2016 exhibit, Kona Ranching and Kona Cowboys. Dimensions are 11"x16".
From the Collections of Kona Historical Society.
