Publication Three: "Profile of Rural Hawaii: A Look at Demographic, Economic and Social Trends in Rural Hawaii"
State of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism. Research and Economic Analysis Division.
May 1994
Excerpt from report: "The decline of plantation agriculture and the rise of tourism pose a challenge to policy makers involved in rural development. The desire to preserve the rural way of life conflicts somewhat with the desire to provide effective new economic activity as a replacement for declining sugar and pineapple activities. To help planners and policy makers assess and address the needs of the rural sector, this report presents a profile of current demographic, economic and social trends in rural Hawaii. It also attempts to identify key trends and issues affecting the economic development of rural Hawaii."
