Item Description
Cowboys take a break at Ahu a `Umi Heiau, a complex of temples located on a dry plateau between Mauna Loa and Hualalai.
The following quote from missionary Reverend Albert Baker mentions the great trails which were built by `Umi:
`Umi, a high chief, is said to have built a road from this place, (Ahu a `Umi) to Ka`u, and in South Kona, on the flow which comes down just north of Miss Paris’ home on the site of Kapiolani’s stone house, and about a dozen miles above, is still to be seen a trail of ancient stepping stones called “ `Umi’s Road.” (Baker, Ahu o `Umi)
This photograph on canvas appeared in Kona Historical Society's 2016 exhibit, Kona Ranching and Kona Cowboys. Dimensions are 11"x16".
