Report One: "The Enduring Legacy of the Hawaiian Chief's Children's School"

This was a talk was prepared by Midkiff for the 105th session of the Social Science Association of Hawaii on April 6, 1987.

Excerpt from report: "One hundred and fifty years ago this week, on April 10, 1837 the seventh company of missionaries, aboard the bark Mary Frazier, landed in Honolulu. The ship made the 16,000-mile voyage around the Cape in the unexpectedly short time of 116 days. She carried the largest reinforcement ever sent to the Sandwich Island Mission — 15 couples and two maiden ladies. Among them were ministers, doctors, teachers, and an assistant secular agent. They were young, with an average age of 26, strong, and well-trained."

Excerpt from included annual report from President: "The Kona Association For Retarded Children has had a year full of excitement due to the progress being made in the development of our new building which is even now in the final stages of construction. It would have been impossible for us to imagine, when we began our project of serving our litter group of retarded children in 1962, that in eight short years we would have a strongly active association promoting an inclusive program of service for trainable retarded children, and in addition, potential occupational/evaluation, work training, sheltered workshop, and activity center for these and other handicapped people of all ages above that here in Kona as well as a successful class for trainable retarded children in neighboring Kohala."
