LAS VEGAS—It's fun talking to Alexa. It's even more fun when you're doing it in a Cadillac CTS-V while being chauffeured through some interesting and only mildly dangerous parts of the Las Vegas cityscape.

But you'll need two things before Muse Auto can do its magic. First, an Amazon account, preferably Prime and even more preferably with a previously existing iteration of the Alexa app already active. Second, a 4G-capable smartphone, though make and model don't much matter here as long as it can download both the Muse app and the Alexa app.

Once you've got that, installing the Muse Auto kit is simply a matter of sticking the voice node to your dashboard, plugging it into your car's USB port (or even just an audio AUX port) and then pairing it and your car's in-dash display with your smartphone using Bluetooth. Once that's all enabled, your car will display a variety of interfaces depending on what kind of car you're driving and its in-dash display capabilities.

In casual use, the Muse works well as long as your phone has access to all your various Amazon accounts. With the right access you've got music and content options that easily rival satellite radio, smart navigation and weather, and even access to podcasts and audiobooks. On an even more practical note, you've got access to Alexa's skill selections, too, which means your Muse can control various smart home features, like lighting or even more appropriately, your garage door.

And, after you stumble out of the office, you can read off your shopping list while driving and Alexa can have those products ordered for tomorrow or even have them waiting for pickup as you pass by the store on your way home.
