Item Description

Osi Audu, Study for Self-Portait (After Dogon Bird Mask), 2018
Graphite and pastel on paper, 7 ½ x 11 in.

Audu’s formal explorations, referred to by R. C. Baker as, "shape-shifting...space-warping geometric abstractions," relate to the Yoruba philosophy about the outer and inner head as an archetype of the tangible and intangible. The abstractions can also be seen as referring to the dual nature of being – body and mind, and the issues of self identity that could be caused by the ontological tension between the outer and inner being.

Osi Audu is a Nigerian American artist whose work has been shown in numerous international exhibitions including the Kwangju Biennale, Venice Biennale, the Africa-Africa exhibition at the Tobu Museum, Japan, and the Museum of the Mind at the British Museum. Museum and corporate collections include Newark Museum, The National Museum of African Art in Washington DC, the British Museum, among others. He recently curated Abstract Minded, an international exhibition of contemporary African art which opened at the N'Namdi Center for Contemporary Art in Detroit in 2017, and traveled to the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art and the August Wilson Center in Pittsburgh, PA in 2018. A current recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, Osi Audu has two upcoming solo exhibitions of his work opening in October 2018; at The Kleinert/James Center for the Arts, Woodstock, NY and Skoto Gallery in Chelsea, NYC.
