Item Description

Bolton Brown (1864 – 1936)
Sunlit Woods, Lithograph on paper, 9 x 14 in.

Known as the “Father of American Lithography,” Bolton Brown (1864-1936) introduced fine art lithography to the United States early last century.  As well as creating his own works, Brown printed lithographs for such significant artists as George Bellows, John Sloan, and Rockwell Kent where his signature as lithographer appears on the work along with the artist’s signature. Brown founded and was the first head of the art department at Stanford University; he was ultimately dismissed for using nude models in his classes. An avid mountaineer, Brown has a mountain named after him in the Sierra Nevada. He discovered the site for and co-founded the historic Byrdcliffe Art Colony at Woodstock in 1902.
