Item Special Note

“Her Voice Empowers: Sisterhood in Action” was designed and painted with a phenomenal group of girls at WHEDco in the Bronx in collaboration with The Other Side nonprofit. We explored themes of global sisterhood, immigrant solidarity, LGBTQ+ acceptance, Bronx pride and female empowerment while also sharing cross-cultural dialogue with a group of girls in Kibera, Kenya. Our students inspired us with their courage, compassion and determination in the face of injustice as they created this mural as well as theatrical performances, songs and poetry that brought these key social justice issues to life. This mural is a love letter to the brilliance and strength of women and girls.

Nadya Voynovskaya
I am a muralist, painter, textile designer and teaching artist. I was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and raised in California and Florida. Beginning in 2011 I was immersed in the mural making process and collaborated on several community-specific murals in Berkeley and Oakland, learning from some of the mural greats of the San Francisco Bay Area. I relocated to New York to further my studies and completed my BFA in Illustration at School of Visual Arts. In my personal art practice I explore the immigrant experience of existing between worlds, ancestral roots, and the potential for youth-led social change.

I joined the Groundswell team in 2016 and have been constantly inspired and challenged to create around themes of social and environmental justice, culture, and collective good. I am inspired to see students help each other improve as artists and thinkers and persevere over personal and creative challenges. It is a joy to contribute my skills to the life-affirming task of creating community murals.
