Item Description
This thangka painting from Mahakala Fine Arts by master artist Mukti Singh Thapa is of Mahakala, the Protector of the Dharma.
Mahakala is considered to be the fierce and powerful emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. He defends the Dharma from hostile forces and protects the individual practitioner from deception and delusion, bestowing power to overcome life's struggles. This stunning piece displays Thapa's mastery of the 13th - 16th century Newar Design style through its rich color palette and use of traditional iconography, while also boasting an almost 'pop art' quality.
Buddhadharma featured this image as their 'Last Page' in the Spring 2018 issue and will be using two more Mukti Singh Thapa images in the upcoming issue
Mukti Singh Thapa is one of Nepal's foremost traditional painters and is credited with reviving the Newar Design style from the 13th - 16th centuries. He is a master of the iconography and styles of this period and paints exclusively in traditional mineral and vegetable pigments. His rich color palette, precise lines, complex designs and unparalleled creativity have brought him acclaim in Nepal and around the world.
