Item Description
The scarf is-- Soft like butter! Our customers have been gobbling these up!
Handwoven on traditional backstrap looms using bamboo yarn hand-dyed in small batches by Asociación Maya de Desarrollo, a 180-woman weaving cooperative in the highlands of Guatemala. Members are genocide survivors and have been working together for over 30 years. Their high-quality weavings are sold around the world in museums, Fair Trade stores, boutiques, Lindblad Expedition (National Geographic) boats, and online by Novica and others. They are likely the most successful artisan cooperative in Guatemala. Soft like butter, with a beautiful drape, these scarves are of the highest quality.
Eliza (A Thread of Hope founder) has been accompanying the cooperative for over 14 years, providing volunteer marketing and organizational consulting.
A Thread of hope – Guatemalan Fair Trade
A Thread of Hope and Asociación Maya are working with Building Goodness Foundation (BGF) in Charlottesville VA to raise $500,000 to construct a new headquarters, showroom, and weaving center for the co-op. The co-op has already invested over $50,000 in purchasing the land and an architect and engineering fees and has committed to invest another $50,000 in the project.
