Item Description

"Eye Feel Blue" by Katie Alexander

Medium: Acrylic on wood

Size: 19" x 8"

Artist Statement:

A couple of years ago, I created a cod for this auction that incorporated concentric circles. I wanted to play around with that structure again this year and decided to use a color gradient this time. I was reminded of color assignments in high school and college art classes, where we experimented with the slightest changes in value to create scales of colors. I always enjoyed these assignments and the challenges they brought to adjust the value just the right amount for each step in the scale. I wanted an eye to be the focal point of this cod, with shades of blue radiating out from it. Many thanks to Ellen Garvey of eGlassyLady for providing me with this unique, handmade, glass eye.

Artist Biography:

I am a Kindergarten teacher at Brookwood School in Manchester, MA, where I incorporate art into my curriculum on a regular basis. I grew up in Marblehead and now live in Beverly. I began taking art lessons at the age of 8, and in high school decided that I wanted to focus on oil painting. I took lessons for three years with Debra and Jack Highberger in their portfolio program at Acorn Gallery in Marblehead, and I'm so grateful for the incredible training I received from them. Over the years I have exhibited artwork in the Marblehead Festival of Arts-in the Painting, Photography, Drawing, Crafts, and Mixed Media exhibits. I have received an Honorable Mention award in the Painting exhibit. I recently served on the Festival's Board of Directors as Director of Exhibits (2017 & 2018), and as co-chair of the Festival's Painting exhibit (2015 & 2016). I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis with a minor in Fine Art, and a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University. In addition to my involvement with the Festival, I am also a member of the Board of Trustees of Temple Emanu-El in Marblehead, where I serve on the Executive Committee as Recording Secretary. Art is my passion and hobby, and I try to find ways to pursue it in my free time.
