Artist Statement:

AH! FISH! I have had a lifelong love of all things fish! The shapes, the colors, the textures. Their movements, their resilience, their beauty. I have regularly used fish as subjects for my artwork, in various mediums and styles, and, like fish themselves, each is individually beautiful! My inspiration for this year's COD Auction comes directly from the New England Coastline that I have long called home. A timeless design which evokes the strength of Coastal New England and its nautical heritage. Displaying the Latitude and Longitude of Marblehead, this Cod will always be home in your home.

Artist Biography:

Joan S. Watson was born and raised within a family of artists in Westchester County, New York. From a young age, Joan was encouraged to pursue her love of art. She was lucky enough to attend a high school that offered a comprehensive art education and prepared for her future studies. Joan studied Visual Arts / Painting at The School of Visual Arts and also The New School at Parsons School of Design, both in New York City. Soon after, Joan relocated to Stowe, Vermont where she concentrated on the design and execution of Mural Painting for residential and commercial clients. In 1998, Joan moved to Portland, Maine. She continued her work as a Muralist with clientele in various states. At that time, her interest in Fine American Craft grew. Having remembered the beautiful hand painted Floor Cloths at her grandparents' Sag Harbor, New York cottage, she set out to learn more about their history and creation. It was her father who helped her with the first few, having made several himself in years past. Though Joan's primary focus is custom Floor Cloths, her love of fine craft can be seen in the many mediums she continues to explore. From woven wire sculptures and found object mosaics, to the hand-turned and hand-painted solid wooden tableware pieces and traditional Floor Cloths, Joan's work is vibrant and expanse. Her work is in numerous private collections and homes throughout the United States and Europe. Currently, Joan splits her time between Stowe, Vermont in the winter months and Portland, Maine in the warmer ones.
