Item Description
"Whimisical Mermaid" by Polyvios Christoforos
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 19" x 8"
Artist Statement:
Polyvios Christoforos a native of Salem is a young artist, illustrator and author of the recently published children's book "Sammy Smart Guy." Although the character of his book Sammy, a young boy with autism is fictional, Polyvios draws on his own personal experience of having and living with autism. With the great support and love of his family especially his mother, Georgia has always chosen to focus on his abilities, rather than his disability. Polyvios's "Sammy Smart Guy" is a proud accomplishment for him and his family and a culmination of two years of work. Polyvios currently enjoys spending time reading his book to students on his mini-tour of elementary schools across the north shore to spread awareness and understanding about autism. He recently had a book signing at the Barnes & Noble in Peabody.
Artist Biography:
As an artist, Polyvios has gained much notoriety during his young career. At age 17, he won first place in the New England Congressional Art Competition for his painting of Greece titled, "Dusk at the Acropolis," which was displayed in the U.S. Capitol building in Washington for a year. Polyvios has had numerous exhibitions of his paintings displayed locally at the Salem Post Office, Boston Children's Hospital, Breaking Grounds Cafe, ArcWorks Gallery, and Brother's Roast Beef Restaurant in Peabody, as well as, Marblehead and Salem Arts Festivals. Christoforos is also a member of the Marblehead and Salem Arts Association. A student at ArcWorks Community Art Center's Discover & Design program of Northeast Arc in Peabody for two years., Polyvios has had speaking engagements throughout the Boston chapter of Autism Speaks.
