Item Description

This is a wonderful Woven Rattan Backpack or "Sangi" made and crafted by the mountain tribes in Northern Luzon, particularly by the Bontoc ethnic group in the Cordillera Region. For centuries, basketry formed an essential part of all aspects of daily life. Baskets range in form and size, from portable lunch containers to woven jars. Winnowing trays, carrying baskets, and covered containers allowed people to harvest, transport, store, and serve food and crops. Assorted basketry also contained personal items, such as tobacco and rice. Hunters embarked on expeditions with woven backpacks filled with provisions to be consumed along the way, which they replaced with meat after a successful hunt. Baskets are made of bamboo, rattan, or a combination of the two. Can be worn and used as a backpack, or hanging on a wall, or storage for magazines! Many options for creative use! Measures 12” wide x 17” tall x 4” deep
