Item Description

"This hand painted Horseshoe Crab Shell is a unique piece of art, which will display beautifully in any setting, from an urban apartment to a beach cottage.

Using water-based oil paints I create original designs inspired by both the canvas of each individual shell and the seas in which the horseshoe crabs live. I have produced a number of distinctive series each evoking different imagery.

This painting, Sea-life #21 is from my Shore Series. Influenced by the natural habitat of the horseshoe crab, my shore paintings express the forms, patterns and myriad colors found in our oceans and costal areas. Horseshoe crabs play a vital role in the life cycle of many shore birds by laying thousands of high protein eggs, a nutrient rich source for the biosphere, which also served as inspiration for this shell painting.

The shells are first prepared for painting by a thorough cleansing process that removes the ocean odors and detritus. Then the shells are fitted with inner supports made of Fire Island driftwood, which stabilizes the inherent fragility of the dried natural shell. Please note that each shell is a natural object and may have blemishes, peculiarities, or distinctions that contribute to every piece's uniqueness. The artwork is the shell only, the background is only for photographic display.

Approximate Size: Body 9.75 long x 8" wide, full length Including tail 16.75"

All the shells I use for these paintings were collected after the crabs had died natural deaths and found washed up on the shores at Davis Park, Fire Island, their life force long gone from them. Their nutrient resources were left on the beaches for the habitat to enjoy, and only the hard shell canvas you see was removed. No Horseshoe Crabs have been harmed in the creation of these works of art!"
