Just happened . . . after 100 years,
West Overton is again distilling rye whiskey!
From the colonial era through the Prohibition to modern times, spirits have payed a fascinating role in our nation's history and here in Western Pennsylvania. West Overton located in Scottdale, PA, has a unique part in this history with its Distillery built in 1859 in which Old Farm Pure Rye Whiskey was once produced.
Visit the historic Abraham Overholt Homestead, built in 1838, and step into the very rooms in which Abraham and Mariah Overholt spent their time -- see the accounting desk used by Abraham along with the preservation efforts made by Helen Clay Frick, daughter of Industrialist Henry Clay Frick, upon her purchase of the site in 1922.
The West Overton Village represents the transformation of American culture from an agrarian society with the production of the coverlets manufactured at West Overton and the distilling operation to the Industrial society with the excavation of coal and ultimately the production of coke, a necessary ingredient for steel. You will also step into the Spring House that served as the birthplace of Henry Clay Frick in 1849.
Today, West Overton Village consists of the remaining eighteen buildings. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a stop on the American Whiskey Trail. West Overton is located approximately 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, in East Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County. It is on PA 819 between the towns of Mount Pleasant and Scottdale.
