Item Description

"Lady with Red Lips" - framed, signed artwork by Bud Simpson

Bud Simpson was born in 1918 on both sides of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers at Cairo, Illinois. He grew up on the banks of the Wabash river. During high school he had odd jobs, cut grass and painted houses. As it was the middle of the depression, there was very little work to be found.

His first regular job was at a radio-parts factory in the middle of a cornfield where he worked the night shift for 12 hours a night, 6 days a week. At a mere 16 cents an hour he eventually saved up enough money to enter The Art Institute, Chicago where he found Paradise!

He was in the army from 1942-1946.

He spent (or misspent) most of his professional life as a commercial artist in New York City. He was successful but not happy. As a way to rekindle the freedom he found in his personal art, he started building sculptural pieces out of reclaimed items. In 1980 he built a house in Shady. In the late 80's he won two Rice Awards for pieces in a group show at Albany's Rice Gallery.

In 1988 he had his first solo show at the Kleinert where he had 52 pieces available to be seen. His pieces were intimate, lyrical and for the most part, lots of fun.
