This special edition bottle (magnum size), the only one allowed to bear the US Flag, is also signed by owner/vintner Steve Sherwin. 

Like so many Americans, Steve and Linda Sherwin took that pledge after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. When they were asked to participate in a wine auction to benefit the families of Windows of the World employees who had been lost in the attacks, they agreed immediately. Sherwin Family Vineyards became one of 100 vintners from two renowned wine-growing regions, Napa Valley and Italy, to donate magnums of wine to the commemorative event in Lake Garda, Italy.

The Sherwins decided to make their magnum truly special with a striking hand-etched, hand-painted design featuring the American flag and the meaningful words “In God We Trust” and “United We Stand.” The back of the bottle also stated that it was proudly created “in remembrance of those lost September 11, 2001.”

The magnum from Sherwin Family Vineyards stood out because of its patriotic beauty and was paired with a 1985 Sassacaia, one of Italy’s finest wines. The pairing was one of the top lots in the whole auction.

Steve and Linda were thrilled that the bottle had been so well received. They wanted to honor victims and survivors of 9/11 by producing more bottles, auctioning and donating them to raise money for charitable causes. But before production could commence, Sherwin Family Vineyards needed approval from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms in Washington, D.C.

Although Steve was told that the government would not approve the image of the American flag on alcohol or tobacco products, he was not ready to give up on the concept. He learned that the only option was to send a bottle in and see what happened. When the bottle was submitted, it was amazingly stamped approved for an exemption right over the counter!

In remembrance of 9/11, they continue to produce a limited number of these beautiful etched and hand-painted bottles each year. These bottles contain only the best Estate Cabernet Sherwin Family Vineyards produces. We donate them to various charitable causes and can also offer them to customers at the winery. Every bottle is individually numbered and makes a striking, patriotic keepsake.
