This block was embroidered by a survivor of gender-based violence (GBV) in the African Country of Mali. It describes life in her village before she was attacked and expelled during conflict.
The block was made into a quilt in 2019 by Patricia Rennau in Vermont. Patricia's quilt studies have convinced her that quilting can be a tool for self-expression, advocacy and for improving lives: “Women have used quilts to express themselves, and their political views throughout the years.” This is what drew her to Sister Artists.
Patricia struggled with her design because her Malian block contained so much white space. She decided to separate the block into three vertical squares and used dark fabric that picked up the thread colors and—she hoped—resembled mud cloth.
All proceeds from this auction will be invested in a quilting project for GBV survivors in Mali. To donate visit our home page - www.advocacynet.org.
