This block was embroidered by a survivor of gender-based violence in the African Country of Mali. It describes life in her village before she was attacked and expelled during conflict.
The block was made into a quilt in 2019 by Glenda Mah in Caifornia. Glenda was attracted to Sister Artists by the Malian connection and the message of social justice. She placed a series of village scenes around her block – a maize field, women returning from market, and fishermen at work in a river. She used her own mud cloth for the brown areas and raw edge applique and “fussy cutting” to produce a frayed edge. This seemed in keeping with the village theme.
All proceeds from this auction will be invested in a quilting project for GBV survivors in Mali. To donate visit our home page - www.advocacynet.org.
