Quilter | Deborah Weir

This block was embroidered by a survivor of gender-based violence in the African Country of Mali. It describes life in her village before she was attacked and expelled during conflict.
The block was turned into a quilt by Deborah Weir in Calfornia. Growing up in a “cold house with sharp angles and stone floors” gave Deborah an early appreciation for warm textiles, but it was as a student of costume design that she learned to love quilts. She was drawn to Sister Artists by the prospect of working with survivors of gender-based violence: “I often wondered about (my) artist and what she went through. Person to person projects are so powerful.”
In designing her quilt, Deborah chose a background of “jungly” fabric. She then
placed her Malian bird in a wild habitat by bringing the border of leaves into the block and extending the border to give an impression of untamed vegetation. She used a machine to trace out the designs onto a water-soluble fabric and needle lace to stitch the designs. Deborah’s next project will be on incarceration.
All proceeds from this auction will be invested in a quilting project for GBV survivors in Mali. To donate visit our home page - www.advocacynet.org.
