This block was embroidered by a survivor of gender-based violence in the African Country of Mali. It describes life in her village before she was attacked and expelled during conflict.
The block was turned into a quilt by Eleanor Levie in Pennsylvania. Eleanor loves advocacy quilting and was quick to answer the call to contribute to Sister Artists. She based her design on photos taken by a friend during a visit to the village of Siby in Mali, where geometric patterns are used during a house-painting festival.
This inspired Eleanor to use the color and design of a log cabin: “I went with an asymmetrical medallion setting, sketched out on graph paper and used freehand-cut fused triangles and patterned fabric from my stash of African batik, and hand-dyed and printed fabrics."
Eleanor feels deep solidarity with the Malian artists: “If I could, I would pin a medal on each courageous woman anywhere who struggles and strives and supports her sisters. For now, my Mali Medallion will have to do. I honor the talent, courage and dignity of a young woman who embroidered a charming depiction of her home life in Mali.”
All proceeds from this auction will be invested in a quilting project for GBV survivors in Mali. To donate visit our home page - www.advocacynet.org.
