_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This block was embroidered by a survivor of gender-based violence in the African Country of Mali. It describes life in her village before she was attacked and expelled during conflict.
The block was turned into a quilt by Ellena Georato in Massachusetts. Ellena learned about Sister Artists from Janice Jones, another guild member. “I needed the practice in art quilting,” she says. “But I also really liked the idea of taking someone else’s embroidery and expanding it to tell a bigger story.” She describes art quilting as being about “whatever you happen to feel on the inside as opposed to following a prescribed formula.”
For her quilt, Ellena used old scarves and remnants of fabric in an African style and raw edge appliqué.
All proceeds from this auction will be invested in a quilting project for GBV survivors in Mali. To donate visit our home page - www.advocacynet.org.
