Item Description

Title: Bassic Training

Artist: David Greenberg

Materials: Bass is 3ft x 1.5ft and made of .5in Kleer (PVC). Aerosol expressed acrylic paint, razor cut stencils, brush technique, sandpaper and tincture of mineral spirits distressing.

Artist's Description: Camouflage design as in “you can’t see me,” hidden in plain sight, with all sorts of metaphors that can be and should be implied. So go ahead and dig deep, especially when juxtaposing the front design with the back images. The painting was created by segregating the different layers of a camouflage design, repeating that to fill out the full bass structure. Then cutting stencils of three separate colors to begin overlaying additional colors to the green background of the front of the bass. The stencils used for the back images were cut into sections for the two finishes: matte and gloss. Distressing the back of the fish was well-suited to the relief of the tension felt when trying to get the stencils to match exactly, as well as the usual stress, strain, pressure of living through this unusual year of the Covid-19. The positioning of the icons on the back will be especially meaningful to anyone who was listening to the radio in 1968 and early December, 1980.
