Title: Rainbow Trout / Honey Bee Mix

Artist: Mark Towner

Materials: Bass is 3ft x 1.5ft and made of .5in Kleer (PVC). Utrecht Acrylic Paint with UV waterproof coating.

Artist's Description: This work, Rainbow Trout / Honey Bee Mix, is an amalgam of current issues surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement, the LGBTQIA+ community, and honey bee populations. The colors included represent each of these loosely defined groups: LGBTQIA+, People of Color, and honey bees. This particular work has several sources of inspiration for me: As a child I was fascinated with the Rainbow Trout, and years later, still long ago, I carved and painted many fish in the “folk-art” tradition. So I integrated my personal history with fish and current events. As an avid bee-keeper and social activist, I integrated several of my concerns into this one work of art.

About the Artist: Mark Towner was appointed Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Endicott College in September 2000. Previously, he held appointments at the University of Iowa, St. Ambrose University, Saint Mary’s College at Notre Dame, Ohio University, and Wayne State University. Additionally, he held positions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Northeast Document Conservation Center, American Craft Museum, and Davenport Museum of Art. Towner received his M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art, where his studies included aesthetics, photography, histories of photography and film, and printmaking. He received his B.A. from Columbia College, where he focused on two disciplines; museum studies and photography. He also studied filmmaking, grant writing, history of photography, and creative writing. Towner continued his education at the American Law Institute-American Bar Association, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography, and Visual Studies Workshop. Throughout his career as a museum and educational administrator, Towner continued to create and exhibit his art. Although formally trained in filmmaking, photography and printmaking, his artistic media also includes digital ink paintings and photo-collage. His works have been exhibited in metro Boston, New York, Chicago, and throughout the country; and are included in dozens of private and public collections.
