This original artwork was created for Art on Science: 26 études an internattional portfolio featuring pictures by artists and words by scientists. This written commentary is by Jane Snyder at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis:

Sandra’s piece What Goes Around, Comes Around captures a global dynamic in the journey of refugees seeking a better life and ending up in limbo. Ironically, they often seek refuge in the very countries whose exploitive actions have contributed to the deplorable conditions causing them to relocate.

The structure of the piece is a mirror image which reminds me of how we use “the other” to reflect or deal with aspects of ourselves—do we see them as similar or different? Are we interested in that difference or are we fearful, hostile, rejecting? The refugee can be a target for projection of our own neediness, helplessness and hopelessness, a target for dehumanization and aggression. Sometimes refugees arouse fears—of homelessness, loss or destitution.

There is a lot of symbolism here: The layers of handmade paper represent the many layers of history behind the interactions between peoples, as well as the layers of the psyche in all of us, from the conscious surface to deep unconscious, our drives and wishes. These layers are stitched together in patterns drawn from genograms, a system of symbols used by psychoanalysts to diagram the emotional and physical relationships within families, including the patterns of immigration, abuse and violence. This piece is printed on Tyvek, a common building material symbolizing the search for a safe home.

There is a resonance between the psychoanalytic process and the artistic process. Both engage in research using their emotional responses as important data points when trying to understand the human condition at a deeper level. Understanding is represented through words, in the case of the psychoanalyst and through visual representation in the case of the artist.
