Item Description

Robert Hein, master guitar and ukulele builder from San Diego was, in his spare time, a dedicated volunteer with Guitars in the Classroom for many years. Robert generously repaired ukuleles for GITC classrooms so hundreds of children to learn to play at school. He took pleasure in knowing he was changing lives with his skills. He and GITC founder Jess Baron worked side by side to repair and salvage donated student ukes. He was a profoundly talented and thoughtful luthier.

Robert passed away on August 10, 2020 and he asked that people wanting to honor his memory donate to our organization. His children, Dee and Damon Hein, made certain Robert could continue to help us do our best by expressing his affection to us and creating a memorial campaign to honor their dear dad. Robert gifted this ukulele to Guitars and Ukes in the Classroom in 2015 and asked that we wait to auction it until we could open bidding at $800. We have kept it safe since then out of respect for his wishes.

This handmade soprano ukulele is the last "virgin" ukulele made by this master builder. It has never been owned by a dedicated player, only protected by GITC for the right future owner. Robert created one of a kind soprano ukes.

Each was custom made with a standard that includes the following: Book-matched Koa wood (Not only book-matched side to side but book-matched top to bottom as well), Honduran Mahogany neck, Ebony Fingerboard, Ebony Bridge, Bone Nut & Saddle, Mother of Pearl Rosette and Porpoise inlays.

Also known for his hand built flamenco guitars, the wooden tuners face back rather than to the sides. Robert took hours to French polish his instruments until they gleamed. This one is no exception. You can see, hear and feel the love he put into creating it.
