Letters from Ralph Waldo Emerson to a Friend, 1838-1853. Edited by Charles Eliot Norton. Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1899, 81 pp. A nice slim volume of olive cloth with gilt letters on spine and front cover, as well as top pages edges. Contains texts of 34 letters written by Emerson. The "friend" is never mentioned by name in the book but is known to have been Samuel Gray Ward (1817-1907), poet and author and "minor Transcendentalist," so to speak.
