Emerson, Ralph Waldo. Representative Men: Seven Lectures. Boston, Phillips, Sampson & Co., no date printed. See Myerson, A22.1.d. This copy of Representative Men does not have a date printed, but according to Joel Myerson’s extensive bibliography of Emerson, was 500 copies printed May 1854. Subsequent printings of the first edition of Representative Men bore the same title page except for the date and, after 1859, the publisher; but one printing was undated and carried the imprint “BOSTON: PHILLIPS, SAMPSON AND COMPANY. | NEW YORK: | JAMES C. DERBY.” This auction title bears the New York Derby imprint. Brown cloth. Front and back covers are blindstamped with floret in each boxed corner. Spine is goldstamped REPRESENTATIVE | MEN | [rule] | EMERSON | BOSTON. Condition good. Signed by previous ownerships at front. Edgeworn. Binding is chipped at the top & bottom. Foxing on pages throughout with shelf wear. Pencil notes at rear. Some pencil marginalia throughout.
