Three-time World Champion Carver Ernie Muehlmatt is a master of life-size and miniature decorative wood sculpture (he holds the record for third-place ribbons as well!). Always in demand as a teacher and judge, Ernie continues to compete and grow as an artist. His signature compositions of clusters of young birds are a favorite among art enthusiasts and collectors. His work can be found in the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, Salisbury Md., and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, WI. He is a Member of the Carvers' Hall of Fame. Ernie now teaches woodcarving, and designs and sells his own line of Air Filtration / Dust Collecting systems known as the Dust Devil Series Dust Collectors.
Born in a small Pennsylvania town in 1927, Ernie Muehlmatt became interested in birds as a boy. Although trained as an artist, he didn't discover his true vocation as a bird carver until his 40's. His first birds were sold in his family's florist shop. As demand for his work grew, he decided to make wildfowl carving a full time career. Now, four woodcarving books, over 6000 wildfowl carvings, and 28 years later, Ernie's carvings and woodcarving seminars became more popular than ever. His books "Wildfowl Carving with Ernie Muehlmatt", "Songbird Carving With Ernie Muehlmatt", "Single Piece Bird Sculpture" , and "Carving & Painting Black-Capped Chickadee with Ernest Muehlmatt" are published by Stackpole Press.
Ernie passed away in 2016.
