Item Description
Exam for cat, dog, or exotic pet. Basket of animal care products
Dr. Marta Dean, founded the LaPorte Animal Clinic in 1996 with her husband, Dr. Andrew Dean. She has been interested in Vet Medicine and working with exotic animals since youth. As a teenager she spent much of her free time volunteering with Tri-State Bird Rescue in Delaware, helping injured and orphaned birds of all species as well as other small wildlife.
While a student at CSU Vet School she spent much of her time with the fledgling raptor rescue program which was located behind the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Along with a small group of veterinary classmates, they fed, treated, and cared for injured raptors in the hopes of releasing them back to the wild. She has been fascinated and pleased to follow the evolution of the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program over the years from a small, student led group to a full fledged community program with a facility of its own, paid staff and many volunteers which has the capability to care for hundreds of birds a year and educate the public.
In her senior year in vet school she did a six week apprenticeship with the veterinarians at the Denver Zoo. She also was a work study student in the wildlife disease lab studying disease of Bighorn Sheep, Elk, Deer, and other wildlife.
Her first years post vet school were spent in various practices in Pennsylvania, Nebraska, and Colorado's Western slope, practicing cattle, equine, and small animal medicine. She also assisted clients with exotic pets and helping occasional wildlife needing treatment.
She and her husband built the LaPorte Animal Clinic in 1996 and have been operating it ever since. While Dr. Marta's main patients are dogs and cats, she enjoys the variety of challenges by seeing all types of animals, from sugar gliders and ferrets to birds, reptiles, and many small mammals, especially rabbits and guinea pigs. In the past, Dr. Marta has helped the W.O.L.F. project with annual exams and medical advice on their animals. Though the time constraints of running a practice have kept her from participating as a volunteer vet for a wildlife rehab program in the last few years, she has remained a supporter. She is always challenging herself to learn new things about proper care of exotics, through continuing education seminars and reading.
