2017 Storybook Mountain Mayacamas Range Zinfandel

Black cherry, berries, hints of cola, and minerals joined by a touch of cardamom and vanilla are in the aromatics of this wine. Focused cherry liquor and refined tannins are at the core of its flavor and structure, a central core of intensity that lingers on and on. Balanced and intense, the wine will complement heartier dishes but has the refinement to be an increasingly graceful table companion for many years to come.

2018 Bodkin Zinfandel High Rock Ranch

Located in the wilderness of Sonoma County, High Rock Ranch has been farmed by the Lewers Family since they planted it in 1997. The vineyard is planted to the Teldeschi Family's heritage clone of Zinfandel, which produces small berried, tight clusters in the mountain side gravely loam. Ranging from 1,700-2,000 in elevation the vineyard is so steep that it can only be farmed using ATVs and tank-treaded tractors. As difficult as the farming can be, it offers fruit of exceptional quality and breathtaking views of the Sonoma Coast.

Stylistically, this wine is a slight departure from our traditional take on Zinfandel. The fruit from High Rock Ranch lends itself to making a wine with moderate acidity and high tannin. While historically Bodkin Zinfandels are high in acid and low tannin, I'm not one to force a round peg into a square hole and wanted to build a wine that showcases what the vineyard offers. For this wine I focused on increasing the fruit's aromatic expression with 40% whole cluster fermentation, limiting the extraction of tannin by reducing the number of pump-overs and then limiting the wine's aging time in barrel. This Zinfandel was aged in a stainless steel tank for 5 months and then saw 3 months in barrel with 25% new French Oak. This combination of stainless steel and barrel aging helped the wine maintain its freshness and varietal expression while imparting a small note of sweet-vanilla oak to accent the fruit and tannin structure.

2019 Decoy Zinfandel

The signature briary, black-peppery characteristics of the variety feature in this medium- to full-bodied wine in the first vintage that it is labeled as California AVA—now using grapes from Sonoma, Mendocino and the Central Coast. Aged in French oak, with 30% new, this wine delivers great balance, crystal clear fruit flavors and an appetizing texture, as moderate tannins grip and shape the raspberry, pepper and wild sage notes.

2019 Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel

An expressive burst of aromas of deep dark fruits lead into layered tones of lifted red fruit and a soft, luscious mid-palate. A juicy, vibrant entry with notes of mint, sarsaparilla, and fresh plum is interwoven with supple, textured tannins and acidity on the long, complex finish.

This wine is lovely paired with grilled steak, sausage and peppers with cheesy polenta, or pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces such as baked rigatoni or pappardelle Bolognese. Semi-hard cheeses such as dry jack – our favorite is from a local Sonoma producer, Vella Cheese Company – and aged cheddar or gouda are great pairing suggestions for happy hour or a last minute get together.
