Item Description
Catch Me If You Can aka Larry the Lure Thief | Larry the Lure Thief is a legendary striped bass, holding the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby record for the most lures as well as the most bait skillfully removed from their rightful owner. Rumored to be over 42” long, Larry has never been landed and seems to take great pleasure in teasing Derby participants by biting their lines then making off with the bait or the lure. He proudly shows his extensive lure collection to the other striped bass in his school, and is rumored to be giving lessons to younger members of his school. While he spends much of his time at the Big Bridge (aka the Jaws Bridge), he has been known to circumnavigate the island just to tease and frustrate Derby participants all over Martha’s Vineyard. The Bass in the Grass auction may well be your best chance ever of actually landing this legend!
Artist: David Joseph
David Joseph is an artist, physician, engineer and inventor who lives on Martha’s Vineyard and in Naples, Florida. David’s media are found object art, photography, and suminagashi. His artistic endeavors began as a child in Chicago, working in geometric acrylics, with several gallery exhibitions during middle school. Equally right and left brained, he went on to enroll at MIT, studying Mechanical Engineering and began Harvard Medical School while still an undergraduate. As an inventor, he found a very satisfying path to combine his scientific skills and his creativity to create new innovations in medicine and healthcare.
An avid international traveler, he has visited over 115 countries, all seven continents, all 50 states, and over 250 UNESCO world heritage sites, each destination an opportunity to photograph nature, wildlife, and portraits. Unable to travel during Covid, David saw the potential to create art from the mundanity around him, creating found object art from old common household items. Each whimsical, thought-provoking piece displays the balanced composition of a trained artist and the skilled construction of an engineer.
Through a juried process, he was offered membership in the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association and The Old Sculpin Gallery, where he exhibits regularly.
