Item Description

7" x 10" Etching and Aquatint handprinted on BFK Rives paper. This is an image taken during a hike in the winter where I noticed that these leaves never fall persisting and being resilient. Aquatint etching is a printmaking technique that produces a full tonal range and rich texture by exposing a copperplate to acid through a layer of melted granulated resin. Aquatint is a variety of etching that belongs to the intaglio family of printmaking techniques, in which the image is incised into a surface and the incised line or sunken area holds the ink. Aquatint differs from etching in that it creates more tonal and textured areas in a final print, resembling watercolor or wash drawings. Aquatint can be etched in a bath of acid or by painting the acid directly on the plate.

Item Special Note

The import of a work of art -- its essential or artistic import -- can never be stated in discursive language. A work of art is an expressive form, and therefore a symbol, but not a symbol which points beyond itself so that one's thought passes on to the concept symbolized. The idea remains bound up in the form that makes it conceivable. Suzanne Langer
